If you have a company that innovates in energy, digitalization or sustainability, this interests you.
What is PERTE ERHA and why is it key now?
The PERTE ERHA was born as part of the recovery plan of the European Union and the Government of Spain. Its mission is clear: promote clean technologies, renewable energy, energy storage and green hydrogen.
But beyond the headlines, what really matters is this: This is a real opportunity to access public funding to promote innovative projects in the energy and technology sector.
With more than 6.900 million euros in mobilized public funds and others 9.5 billion expected in private investment, this PERTE has the capacity to generate profound industrial change in the country.
Areas where aid is concentrated
The funds are organized into different priority lines of action:
- Renewable energies: solar, wind, biomass, geothermal energy...
- Green hydrogen: from production to industrial use or in mobility.
- Energy storage: technologies such as batteries, thermal storage or hybrid stations.
- Digitalization of the energy system: artificial intelligence, big data, IoT or intelligent networks to increase efficiency and resilience.
Any project that acts on any of these areas—especially with a technological or disruptive approach—has high chances of fitting in.
Recent and planned calls
The PERTE ERHA is deployed through specific calls, managed mainly by the IDAE (Institute for Diversification and Energy Saving). Some of the most notable ones include:
- New Business Models for the Energy Transition: This call, closed in August 2023, awarded 102.8 million euros to 95 innovative projects in areas such as demand management, storage, energy communities and digitalization of the energy system.
- Innovative Independent Electrical Storage and Thermal Storage Projects: Call closed in October 2023, focused on energy storage technologies.
- CE IMPLEMENTA Program — Fifth Call: Aimed at unique pilot projects in energy communities, this call was open from September to October 2024.
In addition, according to the official calendar of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, new PERTE ERHA calls are expected to be published in the first half of 2025, with an endowment of more than 480 million euros. These will focus on areas such as renewable self-consumption, energy storage, renewable hydrogen and strengthening the value chain of renewable energies.
What kind of help does PERTE ERHA offer?
This PERTE is deployed through specific calls, managed mainly by the IDAE (Institute for Diversification and Energy Saving). Grants can take different forms, including:
- Non-refundable grants
- Repayable loans with favorable terms
- Combined (mixed) grants
- Support for pilot projects or technological demonstrations
These grants are aimed both at early stages and at the development and implementation of solutions in real environments.
Who can benefit?
One of the great successes of PERTE ERHA is its open and inclusive approach. It is not limited to large energy groups. In fact, it is also designed to incorporate emerging actors who are developing innovative solutions with high impact.
They can participate technology companies that apply energy solutions, organizations with projects of scalable innovation, or research centers and universities who lead key developments. They also have a place public-private collaborations, consortiums and business groups.
The essential thing is that the project contributes to a real energy transition, with measurable environmental impact, economic viability and scaling or replication potential.
Examples of projects that fit
To better illustrate the type of initiatives that can benefit, think of a digital platform that helps optimize energy consumption of industrial or residential buildings, or in a energy community that manages its self-consumption in a shared and efficient way. There is also a place for green hydrogen pilot plants applied to industrial processes, as well as new intelligent storage solutions with the latest generation of batteries.
On the other hand, developments that combine AI, sensors and predictive models to anticipate energy demand or balance the grid. The key is not just to have technology, but to demonstrate that it can be applied, scaled and have a real impact on the current energy model.
